I grew up indoctrinated by political correctness. Like a large part of citizens in Western countries I was brainwashed: Races do not exist, all are equal. Saying anything different, saying that there are racial differences, is racism, a crime.

In school I heard disparaging remarks about Artur Jensen and other “unscientific” “dishonest” “cheating” scientists doing faulty research about race differences.
The Bell Curve by Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray actually looked fairly convincing to me, but if even President Bill Clinton denounced it, there must be something wrong about it.
There always was some complex theory to explain away the IQ differences:
- different culture
- parental expectation
- mother’s malnourishment
- IQ measurements are racially and culturally biased
My opinion changed when I read about trans-racial adoption studies. That was the last drop that really disproved all these desperate attempts to explain away racial differences in intelligence.
“The best evidence for the genetic basis of race-IQ differences comes from trans-racial adoption studies of Oriental children, Black children, and Mixed-Race children. All these children have been adopted by White parents at an early age and have grown up in middle-class White homes.”
Chart 9 summarizes the results for Oriental children adopted into White middle-class homes.
Korean and Vietnamese babies from poor backgrounds, many of whom were malnourished, were adopted by White American and Belgian families. When they grew up, they excelled in school. The IQs of the adopted Oriental children were 10 or more points higher than the national average for the country they grew up in. Trans-racial adoption does not increase or decrease IQ. The three-way pattern of race differences in IQ remains.”
In plain English: adopted Asian babies grew up to be very bright, adopted black babies grew up to have low intelligence.
One more desperate argument that was posed to save the “racial equality” dogma:
They claimed “expectancy effects,” not genes, explained the pattern. They argued that the Black and White children were not treated the same. Even if parents took good care of their children, the schools, classmates, and society as a whole discriminated against Black children and this hurt their IQs. Because we expected Black children to do poorly in school, they lived up to our low expectations.”
Even that argument got promptly destroyed. Rushton:
A special analysis of the Scarr study compared parents who believed that they had adopted a Black baby but, really, had adopted a Mixed-Race (Black-White) child. The average IQ for these Mixed-Race children was just about the same as for other Mixed-Race children and above that for adopted Black children. This was true even though the parents who adopted these Mixed-Race children thought their babies really had two Black parents.

That did it for me. It destroyed my ingrained indoctrinated beliefs that all races must be equal. It opened up my mind to the possibility that there could be racial differences.

Summary of Racial differences
Then of course, the non-scientific “evidence”, the hearsay, the anecdotal evidence, our daily experience, suddenly made sense:
The Whites who explored China were just as racist as those who explored Africa, but their descriptions were different from what they and the Arabs had written about Africans. In 1275 Marco Polo arrived in China from his native Italy to open trade with the Mongol Empire. He found that the Chinese had well built roads, bridges, cities connected by canals, census takers, markets, standardized weights and measures, and not only coins, but paper money as well. Even a postal system was in existence. All of these made him marvel when he compared the Chinese to what he saw in Europe and the Middle East.
Even though he was an Italian, proud of his people and well aware of the greatness of Ancient Rome, Marco Polo wrote: “Surely there is no more intelligent race on earth than the Chinese.”
In amazing ways, Rushton forms a coherent picture to make sense of all the racial differences shown in reasearch. Some differences are biological and can not be talked away by simple psychobabble or sociology-babble.
In a few cases medical treatment and medication showed racial differences. which proves a real quagmire for race equality dogmatist. Should they talk away and hide the differences as racist and cause medical malpractice and suffering for black patients? Or should they accept the scientific facts and actively promote racial analysis of medical studies and see their beloved pet dogma undermined?
Rushton’s book sums up the relevant research. Please forgive me for always quoting Rushton, incessantly. Nobody can say it better, nobody summed up the entire field in a more concise and coherent manner then Rushton.
Many statistics in Chart 1 come from the United States, where Orientals are a “model minority.”
They have fewer divorces, fewer out-of-wedlock births, and fewer reports of child abuse than Whites.
More Orientals graduate from college and fewer go to prison.
On the other hand Blacks are 12% of the American population and make up 50% of the prison population. In the U.S., one out of every three Black men is either in jail, on probation, or awaiting trial. That is much more than the number who graduate from college.
Chapter 2 shows how this racial pattern in crime is found worldwide. INTERPOL Yearbooks show the rate of violent crime (murder, rape, and serious assault) is four times lower in Asian and Pacific Rim countries than in African and Caribbean countries. Whites in the United States and in European countries are intermediate. The 1996 INTERPOL violent crime rates clearly show this pattern: Asian countries, 35 violent crimes per 100,000 people; European countries, 42; and African countries, 149.
Chapter 2 also finds that Oriental children are slower to mature than White children while Black children are faster to mature. This is true for the rate of bone and tooth development and the age at which a child first sits, crawls, walks, and puts on clothing. Oriental children do not begin to walk until about 13 months, White children at 12 months, and Black children at 11 months.
Chapter 3 looks at racial differences in sexual activity. Orientals are the least sexually active, whether measured by age of first intercourse, intercourse frequency, or number of sexual partners. Blacks are the most active on all of these. Once again Whites are in between. These contrasts in sexual activity lead to differences in the rate of diseases like syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, and chlamydia. There are high levels of AIDS in Africa, Black America, and the Caribbean and low levels in China and Japan. European countries again fall in between.
The races differ in rate of ovulation (Chapter 3). Not all women produce one egg during the menstrual cycle. When two or more eggs are produced at the same time, a pregnancy is more likely. So is the likelihood of producing fraternal twins (i.e., two-egg twins). The number of twins born is 16 out of every 1,000 births for Blacks, 8 out of every 1,000 births for Whites, and 4 or less for Orientals. Triplets and other multiple births are rarest in Orientals and highest in Blacks, with Whites in between.
Chapter 4 is about race and intelligence. Hundreds of studies on millions of people show a threeway pattern. IQ tests are often made to have an average score of 100, with a “normal” range from 85 to 115. Whites average from 100 to 103. Orientals in Asia and the U.S. tend to have higher scores, about 106, even though IQ tests were made for use in the Euro-American culture. Blacks in the U.S., the Caribbean, Britain, Canada, and in Africa average lower IQs — about 85. The lowest average IQs are found for sub-Saharan Africans — from 70 to 75.
Chapter 4 also looks at brain size. Bigger brains have more brain cells and this leads to higher IQs. The races vary in brain size. The Collaborative Perinatal Project followed more than 35,000 children from birth to seven years. Orientals had larger brains than Whites at birth, four months, one year, and seven years. Whites had larger brains than Blacks at all ages (see Chart 2). The data on adults in Chart 2 come from a sample of 6,325 U.S. Army personnel.
Chapter 5 asks whether differences in our brain size, our bodies and our behavior are because of genes, environment, or both. It also asks whether individual differences can tell us anything about race differences.
Chapter 6 discusses the gene based “life-history theory” I have proposed to explain the racial pattern in brain size, intelligence, and other traits. Evolutionary biologists call it the r-K scale of reproductive strategies. At one end of this scale are r-strategies that rely on high reproductive rates. At the other end are K-strategies that rely on high levels of parental care. This scale is generally used to compare the life histories of different species of animals. I have used it to explain the smaller but real differences between the human races.
On this scale, Orientals are more K-selected than Whites, while Whites are more K-selected than Blacks. Highly K-selected women produce fewer eggs (and have bigger brains) than r-selected women. Highly K-selected men invest time and energy in their children rather than the pursuit of sexual thrills. They are “dads” rather than “cads.”
Chapter 7 shows that the race differences in reproductive strategies make sense in terms of human evolution. Modern humans evolved in Africa about 200,000 years ago. Africans and non-Africans then split about 100,000 years ago. Orientals and Whites split about 40,000 years ago.
The more north the people went “Out of Africa,” the harder it was to get food, gain shelter, make clothes, and raise children. So the groups that evolved into today’s Whites and Orientals needed larger brains, more family stability, and a longer life. But building a bigger brain takes time and energy during a person’s development. So, these changes were balanced by slower rates of growth, lower levels of sex hormones, less aggression, and less sexual activity.
Why? Because Africa, Europe, and Asia had very different climates and geographies that called for different skills, resource usage, and lifestyles. Blacks evolved in a tropical climate which contrasted with the cooler one of Europe in which Whites evolved and even more so with the cold Arctic lands where Orientals evolved.
Because intelligence increased the chances of survival in harsh winter environments, the groups that left Africa had to evolve greater intelligence and family stability. This called for larger brains, slower growth rates, lower hormone levels, less sexual potency, less aggression, and less impulsivity. Advanced planning, self-control, rule-following, and longevity all increased in the non-Africans.
I realize that these topics are controversial and that readers will have many questions. Chapter 8 lists the questions I am most asked about Race, Evolution, and Behavior, and my answers to them.
Conclusion
Race is more than “just skin deep.” The pattern of Oriental-White-Black differences is found across history, geographic boundaries, and political-economic systems. It proves the biological reality of race. Theories based only on culture cannot explain all the data shown in Chart 1. The next three chapters describe the scientific findings on race differences (summarized in Chart 1) in greater detail. Later chapters explain why these differences follow such a pattern.

First of all you cannot measure intelligent cross culturally. Blacks and whites have a different culture. So emphasize is placed on DIFFERENT areas of life. I’m sure if you take a bunch of high IO white people drop them off in the middle of Africa they would die, they would fail the IQ test of life. Why is it right that your IQ test is based on Physic or Math? When Blacks do not place and emphasis on those things? And then you test them based on what YOU quality as intelligent and they fail, than you say “see!! They are less intelligent then us!” And you can’t test a small group of Black in the U.S.A and say they stand for ALL Black people, especially since the Black people in the United States are only 11% of the U.S population. 7 billion Black people in the world, 8 million in the United States. A hand full of Black people in the United States do not stand for the whole Black race! Especially when the Black population in the United States are disproportionally: Poor, subject to discrimination, subject to poor education, battling drug abuse at home, crime in the neighborhood ,poor diet ect. Ect. Ect. And the when you go outside of the United States to AFRICA these people are more concerned with life skills, then book skills. So how can you give them a test base on things they do not study? How can you compare them to a totally different culture? That’s like me being a dancer saying that I think it’s smart if you can dance will, then I give a person an IQ test based on dance who has never danced or only dances as a hobby. YOU fail! you so stupid. Yet all along this person thought it was smart if they learned how to live off the land in harmony with the earth.
You should consider doing some research on I.Q. tests. They are not about math and physics.
Enviroment is responsible partially for intelligence, but genetics are responsible for much more.
This has been established with studies on children adopted at birth by families of different races and socio-economic status.
Black children adopted by white or Asian middle or higher income families had higher I.Q.’s than children raised by their black families or economically disadvantaged families–but only by a few points. Their scores were still markedly lower than caucasian or asian children.
Asian children adopted by white families still had higher I.Q.’s than white children.
Genetics still has more to do with intelligence than any other single factor.

You seem to me to be sliding more and more into attitudes against blacks which are frankly unacceptable. Even if their average IQ was slightly lower, how does this automatically translate into looting following an earthquake? These are clearly cultural differences, not differences in IQ. Even if there was a slight difference in average intelligence, always expecting the worst from black people in every situation is not right.
My point about Vietnam was trying to show that a country’s level of economic development and its people’s intelligence don’t necessarily correlate, especially since different countries compare differently to each other in different periods of history. China was poorer than Europe for a couple of centuries before “communism”, while it was much richer than Europe during the Middle Ages, even though the people involved still have the same genes.
The fact that medieval China had a well developed infratructure which impressed Marco Polo, while Africa didn’t, does not prove that the Chinese are more intelligent. In his famous book “Guns, germs and stell”, Jared Diamond explains the difference in technology and economic development between different parts of the world as deriving from geographic factors, and not from racial differences.
By the way, you suggest that Vietnamese, being Asians, are very intelligent, but if you go to Vietnam, the country is extremely poor and underdeveloped, as was China a few decades ago. How does this fit in with your views?
Vietnam had an enormous war and a communist regime that held back China and Russia in spite of highly inteligent and educated people. Compare this with African war zones, they are doing pretty well. Compare it with Haiti even before the earthquake.

We do research. Some people just want to know things. Find out laws of nature. Some people would like to help innner cities. Or Africa. And for that we have to understand the reasons why these places are poor and criminal.
Most scientists believe that we can solve problems only if we truly understand them. So they want to know the truth in order to then find the best solutions.
There are lots of links to studies, and inside the studies to other studies. If you are really interested, a true scientist, then verify all studies. Most are peer reviewed studies by real University professors according to recognized research methods.

Put aside the IQ test being a paradigmally constructed quasi-scientific measurement, the author claims that the concept of it being created through expectancy effects can be disproved by stating that parents behaved as if their children were black, when, in fact, they were of mixed race, while the critical argument mentions the perceptions of “the school, classmates and society as a whole”. In the situation with the black-white mixed-race children the distinction between the “pure black” and “mixed-race” children is highly visible (the skin pigmentation differs). Now I`m going to make an assumption here that the white middle-class parents didn`t care specifically to go everhywhere after their black adopted child and explain to everyone in detail the racial identity of both of the kid`s parents. This brings us to a conclusion that no matter what the parents thought, the societal perceptions of “black” and “mixed-race” children, based on different visual perceptions, might have differed, just as it states in the text of the criticical remark Rushton is so quick to disclaim.
I do not try to apologetically defend the presented point of view – I am just stating that this particular attempt of disproving is based on a logically inconsistent explanation.

The research table shows that we as humans are fanatic about giving ranks to anything, drawing conclusions from these ranks and applying conclusions to a whole group of people from a scanty set of subjects.

Sorry white people, I don’t buy your “I’m not racist” line. If you are subscribing to these theories of race and intelligence, you are racist. If you are still actively questioning them, then there’s a little bit of hope left for you.
I’m going to jump right to my point about why it seems that blacks are less intelligent. The culprit is religion. I tell black people all the time “it’s not your skin color, it’s your culture that’s to blame”. Being black and having grown up with blacks (how many of you all can say that?), I can tell you first hand that from the moment a black child enters the world, he or she is indoctrinated with a bunch of silly stories and superstitions that are then reinforced by the same mundane coincidences that occur daily. These reinforcements slowly begin to take the emphasis off logic and science and put it on superstitions that cannot be proven. This explains why there are so few black scientists, mathematicians, economists, engineers, etc and so many black social scientists, civil rights leaders, lawyers, judges, cops, etc. They are doing “God’s work” of providing justice. This is a race-wide problem. Compare sub-Saharan Africa to East Asia. Who produces more products, the people that believe in multiple superstitions or the ones who believe in that which can be proven, ie math and science? We can prove that 9×9=81. We cannot prove that killing 20,000 people per year keeps dead royalty happy (Annual Customs performed by the Dahomey who were subsequently wiped out by the French; amen). I know black people who are semi-rich who cannot spell simple words and wouldn’t know H2O from H2O2 or O2 from O3. They wouldn’t be able to find Brazil on a map. On top of that, I read a study that said a child born into a very religious family will be even less intelligent than his or her parents.
Go to an orphanage and get a black child, a white child, a hispanic child and an Asian child. Raise them together and keep religion totally away from them. Teach them math and science along with all the other things the need. By time they grow up, you will have 4 people of average to above average intelligence.
Do the same thing but feed them religion and you will have 4 unintelligent slaves who you can lead around just by saying “this is what God demands”.
Thus, blacks can do anything that other races can do once we excise the demon of religion from our culture. How long will that take? Unfortunately, I believe a very long time because the church is deeply rooted in our culture like a blood cancer.

Most, if not all of your so-called high IQ societies are secular. America has a lower average IQ because America is highly religious. Have you been to the south lately? Churches outnumber libraries. DARPA came from the west coast, as did Boeing and Microsoft. I went to a relatively small university with a relatively prestigious graduate program. This was in the US. This school, for some reason, received a relatively high number of African students that come to study in the US via a few very prestigious and competitive fellowship programs (that I’m sure most people have heard of but I won’t mention). So these should have been the cream of the crop so to speak. I am not racist and was friends with many of these students. Having class with them though, it was obvious that they were significantly less bright than the average white or asian student. They struggled much more with things relatively free of cultural bias, like conceptual problems linking flows of cause-effect via diagrams etc. This is quite anecdotal, but matches the research presented here.

I also flipped POV on race and IQ, in about 2003, after actually bothering to check the data instead of just watching the TV documentaries pumped out for the masses. Even more of a surprise was finding out that race/IQ differences being at least partly genetic was the most common POV among psych phds (only 15% support the environmental cause kiddies).

Martin, FYI, modern human populations started to go there seperate ways about 130k ago, and you’d have to assume there’s been zero evolution regarding the human brain in that time for ‘no IQ differences’ to be true. As it is we know of at least two relatively recent mutations not seen in Africans but found in Eurasians. Relative brain size also varies, and exactly the way you’d expect ot to if brain mass was related to the IQ scores.

I am Black, in Sub-Saharan Africa. I concur with these theories on intelligency based on race. The environment has historically provided challenges to those in it, and therefore shaped coping mechanisms which have been incorporated into their genes through evolution.
That said, it does not make me less human, just a human with less capabilities in some areas and more in others. Sex tourism and some sports is a testimony to a fact that all races have something to contribute to other’s well being!
If that is not enough, then you have to devise some genetic engineering to speed up the evolution of blacks. Instead of hundreds of thousands of years it has taken the whites to develop superior IQs, the times will minimal!
People with the least self control, lowest IQ, highest criminality have by far the most children. We strongly select for lower IQ people, independent of race. Even within the white or black races. We breed future generations with lower IQ and higher criminality. It is sad. So even without genetic manipulation, with simple breeding, we do the opposite of what you suggest.

As for the article you commented on, the IQ score differences may be due to chance – there is no report anywhere about statistical significance of the differences. In plain language, unless those differences are large enough they may be so due to chance. But let’s proceed further and assume they are significant; there are still problems with the argument.
One obvious issue is whether IQ itself is an appropriate measure of human intelligence. Ideally, a study like that should at least aim to provide other measures that either confirm or contradict the basic finding -that is doing unbiased research. Let’s accept that IQ is a valid measure -and indeed the best one – and other issues emerge.
IQ differences between “races” (genetically, a misnomer) may be environment-driven and therefore an environmental adaptation. If it is true that Races do not exist and all are equal, then why we need to categorize some people as Black, some people as White, some people as Latino and some people as Asian?

People talk about averages all the time. Lets look at nobel prize winners. China, with 1 billion people, has won only 5, Japan with 160 million, only 17. Israel with 5 million people, 8 winners.

we had a problem when we first formed this country. we considered african americans as inferior, and we owned them as slaves. this is what happens when you start to malign an entire group of people. sure, there are differences in race. i would also agree, that for whatever reason, there are differences in intelligence amongst the races. however, i think you are confused about the term “equal”. its more of a legal term. it doesn’t mean everyone is just as smart as everyone else. it means we are all equal in the eyes of the law. so, “all men are created equal” is not political dogma from the left. plus, when dealing with genetics, there will always be exceptions (as with anything). so, there’s the possibility of the very unintelligent white person, the asian that’s bad at math, or the black person that can’t dance. in other words, there really isn’t anything practical to do with your information.

You want to talk about White collar crimes but if we look at government statistics crimes like fraud, embezzlement, theft and forgery we still see that blacks are highly overrepresented as arrestees while Whites are underrepresented on a per capita basis. Even gambling related crimes are overwhelmingly committed by African Americans. African-Americans make up 13% of the population yet they account for approximately 30%+ of all arrests in these categories.
We can see the same pattern with hate crimes and even serial killing statistics along with crimes like forcible rape.

Not likely. Daily headlines are full of violent crimes committed by white criminals. And, of course, all the violent criminals in Russia and Eastern Europe are white. In fact they’re exporting their criminality to other parts of the world.
In regards to white collar crimes, I’m glad you had enough sense to distinguish between those who are arrested and those who get off scott free. How long did it take them to finally catch Madoff? How long do you think a black man pulling those kinds of scams would’ve lasted? Certainly no where as long as Madoff.
So most white collar crimes aren’t even prosecuted. How many people went to prison in the various lootings of our banking system or Wall Street? How about the savings and loan thefts? Tax cheats with billions overseas. Crooked defense contractors stealing billions. Do they face prosecution? In most cases they don’t even get investigated.
It’s kind of like the way store security employees watch black people like hawks while white women steal them blind. Can we really trust shoplifting arrest statistics then? They certainly don’t give us an accurate picture of what’s really going on.

But once blacks and Latinos are stopped, they’re no more likely than whites to be arrested. But the fact that vastly more are being stopped means vastly more will be arrested and vastly more will go to prison, and all of this will be reflected in crime statistics. In other words, white criminals who otherwise would’ve been arrested and prosecuted aren’t being stopped by the cops.
Regarding hate crimes, I don’t know what you’re trying to say there. If you’re trying to suggest that blacks commit more hate crimes you’re wrong.
On forcible rate, let me remind you that there is an epidemic of white-on-white date rape on college campuses. Date rape is forcible rape. Rape, by the way, is a largely unreported crime. What’s more, while of course black men commit rapes, we also have a history in this country of black men being railroaded on false rape charges, while many white men have gotten away with rape. Often times it all depends on who can afford better lawyers. If you’re relying on a public defender in a rape case you’re probably screwed, even if you’re innocent.
